the class party

I went to the class party yesterday, and I enjoyed it very much.
I ate yakiniku after a long time, so I enjoyed eating itself, and ofcourse, talking with you all was fantastic! I might eat too much yesterday...(^-^;)

I enjoyed and loved this class a lot. I was happy I could talk with you all a lot. There were lots of fun and good stimulation. And I feel my English has improved since I took this class.
I wish we could continue the class...(>_<)

Thanks everyone! and thank you, Mr.Philips!

Party, huh?

I was lucky enough to be in the class today. I asked you questions cos. I wanted to share ideas with you, guys. That was fun! The modern world is now a place which I think we got a lot to talk about.

Since I am absent from Thursday's class because of a job interview in Aomori-shi, I guess I should take a role as an organizer of our party this week if you like. Any suggestions, please. For example, we could choose MoMo, a yakiniku place, as a venue for a party since the place is close to HiroDai and the cost is not so as high as that of several fancy restaurants in Dotemachi or anywhere else. But we haven't decided yet. Wide open. Some of you may work the day we go. Although we got only several days to decide, I think we can decide since we've got this virtual blog site in which each of our messages are basically uploaded on the site within a second or so. I'm so glad to take the role of organizer for you all, so please tell me where we will go and which day we shall go, Friday or Saturday. The blog is always opened online unless we have some technical problem or blackouts in the coming days.

Thanks for reading. All the best...

How are you?

Long time no see not only on blog, but also in class(^ ^;)But don't worry, I'm fine☆ I'm tired of final exam and club activity...
By the way, I got a friend from Honduran recently. In my seninar, we are trying to make our homepage in foreign language in order to spread our study in the world. And now we are making it in English. So we need someone who check our English. First we asked Mrs. Hanna Sawada to check it, but she is busy and doesn't have enough time. In place of her, she intoroduced us one international student, Maribel. She said she can help us to check it if we help her to study Japanese. She wants friend to practice her Japanese. We agreed with her suggestion. Last friday we had lunch together. Her Japanese was very good, I surprised. We enjoyed our conversation. We'll meet in summer vacation. I want to try teaching Japanese and become more friendly with her. I also want her to teach English.
And I'll start a tutor of Chinese student from the second semester. Now I don't know what should I do yet, but I'm looking forward to meet and talk with the Chinese student. I think I can spend worthwhile days!!

I went to the US★

I went to Amerika ! ...in Aomori★ Can you see what I mean?
I found a cafe in Aomori. The cafe had Amerikan atmosphere. Because the orner and staff were Amerikan. All of there was Amerikan style. So I was surprised and became happy. I felt like I'm in Amerika(^.^)
And, actually, there is a international scool beside the cafe. Maybe the same person is running them.
I was very interested in there. If you are interested in, please try to visit.
Do you know ASPAM in Aomori city? They are near ASPAM. They face a big road which is in front of ASPAM.

Thai restaurant in Aomori?

I was talking about Thai food a few weeks ago and how I miss it from the States because it's so hard to find in Japan. I just found out that the Thai embassy has a list of Thai restaurants in Japan. There was none in Akita, but one was listed for Aomori:

TOM YAM KUN
030-0802
3-3-3 Honcho, Aomori-shi
0177-77-9899

I don't know how authentic it is. I've never eaten there. Maybe someone else can try it out and tell us how it is.

Inuneko Report

I introduced the showing event of a film Inuneko before. It was held last Sunday. I want to write about this below.

The showing was taken place twice, and both of them were practically full. After that, Director of the film Nami Iguchi talked about the film in front of the audiences. They also asked a lot of questions. They appeared to be satisfied with the showing and the talk, so I, a volunteer staff, was very happy.

After this event, we held a drinking party. I talked a lot with Director Iguchi over delicious food and drink. She told me how hard it is to finish a film, how strong power a producer has, her new film information, and so on. It was very valuable experience for me to be able to talk with a great and famous director.

Finally, I will give you information. 8mm version Inuneko DVD is released August 26(35mm version DVD is on sale). If you are interested in these films, please watch them. I hope you'll enjoy them, and I'm looking forward to talking about it with you.

How long has the rainy season lasted?

It was fine today but the rainy season hasn't ended.
Do you think this year's one is a little long?
I dislike damp weather because my motivation to do everything become bad...(-.-)

Please end the rainy season!!
After that the summer vacation is coming, and we will be able to enjoy some summer festivals, such as Nebuta, Neputa, fireworks display and so on.
But before that, we have to get over exams and reports...(;一_一)
Anyway, let's try our best!!

The Blues

I hope you enjoyed today's class.

As I mentioned, The Blues Brothers was one of my children's most popular videos. I think most children have fantasies about acting the way John Belushi and Dan Akroyd did in the Chez Paul.

Alan Lomax was an amazing collector of folk music, not just in the US but around the world. I use his books and recordings in my folk ballads class at Akita University. Some of his collections are available from the Library of Congress. Others are available commercially. One song, "Po' Lazarus", a ballad he recorded in a penitentiary, was even included in the movie "Oh, Brother". The soundtrack from the movie, mostly traditional folk music, went number one, and was best album at the Grammy Awards that year (2001). Not best folk album. Not best Country album. Not best film soundtrack album (well, it did also win that). Best album.

"The Land Where the Blues Began" is one of the most popular videos I have shown to my American students at Misawa. The American Patchwork series of videos doesn't seem to be available at the website for PBS anymore, but the American Roots Music series is.

Traditional American music continues to be popular. Amazon.com was advertising Bruce Springsteen's new folk music CD on its front page, and the CD was number one even before it was released.

Visiting a buried cultural properties center

Hi! How are you doing?? Are you enjoying your weekends?

Yesterday I visited Inakadate village with a friend for archaeology homework.
Inakadate has a great buried cultural properties of Yayoi era.
The remains of paddy fields. Before this remains were found, most of archaeologist thought there was no Yayoi era in northern tohoku area. That was a really big finding. The center was really good. The most interesting thing was that we could walk on the Yayoi ground!! And you can see footprints of Yayoi people. Isn't that so interesting?

And we also visited a museum which shows paintings, old fariming tools, old furnitures and so on. That was interesting too. We had really good time. I loved the center a lot.

But... there are not so many people who visit this center which holds great remain, a staff sighed. The problem is... there were no signs or information for the center! And there is a big 'Michino-Eki' in front of that, so people never notice the center.
If you are interested in archaeology, please visit Inakadate and have a look!

music of past time

Do you know a person, hide?
mabye you will imagine Nakata Hidetoshi(^^;?

But the person I want to talk about here is a former menber of a group, whose name is X-japan. It's japanese rock music group. They broke up long time ago and hide restarted his work alone.

His activity was probably going well, but he was killed in an accident. Many media reported about it. In some TV program, a lerge number of his fans cried. they said he was fantastic man. according to the news, i got to know him in detail in fact.

I liked some of his work. "pink spider","ever free"etc.. these are new products in his works.

Recentlly, I suddenly want to listen to cassette tape. And I found his music. It was the tribute album in which many kind of people who respect him sing his song with their condolences.

I remenbered one of them said such a thing at that time.
' why do people say ,"he was wonderful man," ? why didn't people said, "he is wonderful man," while he lived?'

I think there has been many invisible thing at various points. his music is really uniqe, atractive and exellent . but I can't found it during his life.

It is not until when we lose somone or something that we notice sincerely the importance.

Today, I went to take rock bath??(GANBANYOKU) in SAKURANO ONSEN with my friend. This is the first time for us. It costs 1300 yen. We spent 2hours there. We are on diets for this summer! We were sweating all over, but it's very confortable and we could refresh! I wanna recomend you(^_^)/

Inuneko

Good afternoon. Long time no see on this blog. I think I have to write more. How is your summer? I think this summer is comfortable, because it is not so hot. I mean so far... Anyway, let's enjoy this summer season.
Last week, I went to ex-cafe Yupanqui, which is located near the five-storied pagoda, to see a film Inuneko (2001, 35mm version, this film has two versions), directed by Nami Iguchi, starring Kanako Enomoto and Yoko Fujita. It was great, and what's more, the showing way was interesting. It was projected on the white wall of the house. I've never experience such a way of showing, so it was fresh for me.
You can also experience this. 8mm version Inuneko(2004) is showing in Yupanqui on July 9(13:00~, 19:15~). This version is her independent film and rare to see. In addition to this, Director Nami Iguchi comes and talks there. If you are interested in this event, please tell me. I will tell you more details. Don't miss this precious chance!

Last weekend

I went to Space Denega last week, and enjoyed drinking coffee and eating fish and chips at Zilch.
When I went out there, I met a person who is known to us.
There was Mr.Ishido!!
I was so suprised that I triped on one of the stairs.
The reason why he was there is to pick up his wife. His wife practiced ceramic art there.
I chated with him a little.
His appearance was different from his in the university. He looked casual.
He deigned to watch the back of my car to reverse up to the road safety.
I thaught afresh he was a gentleman.

Huck FInn

Good morning! It's becoming hotter these days, isn't it?

I enjoyed Huck Finn last time though I didn't really understand what they said.
I think Huck is a mischievous and clever boy. And he is pure, too. I've read a book of Huck Finn( in Japanese, though...) , and I liked it very much. He always solve difficult problems with his cleverness.
It's so exciting to read. He gives us some questions about such as racism or social problems through his adventure in the book.
If you have time, please try reading it.

Casablanca

Casablanca is one of the top movies of all time. Users of the Internet Movie DataBase have ranked it #5 in the top 250 movies of all time, anywhere in the world. There are so many goofs in the film, so much of it is so hokey, yet it works somehow. I don't know how it works, maybe it's the pace or the action or the humor or the romance or the way it all fits together somehow.

There are so many famous lines from the film. See if you can remember who said these:

"We hear very little and we understand even less."

"This is the customary roundup of refugees, liberals, and of course, a beautiful young girl for M'sieur Renault, the Prefect of Police."

A: "I don't buy and sell human beings."
B: "Too bad, that's Casablanca's leading commodity."

"In Casablanca, human life is cheap."

A: "I stick my neck out for nobody."
B: "My dear Rick, when will you learn that in today's world, Isolationism is no longer a practical policy."

A: "I stick my neck out for nobody."
C: "A wise foreign policy."

"Are my eyes really brown?" (In a black and white movie?)

A: "It's December, 1941 in Casablanca. What time is it in New York?"
D: "Huh? My watch stopped."

"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."

"Is that cannon fire, or is it my heart pounding?"

"Kiss me. Kiss me as if it were the last time."

"Even Nazis can't kill that fast!"

E: "Another visa problem has come up."
C: "Show her in."

"As leader of all illegal activities in Casablanca I'm an influential and respected man."

"It would take a miracle to get you out of Casablanca and the Germans have outlawed miracles."

"Now you're beginning to live like a Frenchman."

C: "Have you got those letters?"
A: "Are you pro-Vichy or Free French?"
C: "Serves me right for asking a direct question. The subject is closed."

A: "So Yvonne's gone over to the enemy."
C: "Who knows, in her own way she may constitute an entire second front."

C: "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here."
F: "Your winnings, sir."
C: "Oh, thank you very much."

A: "And remember, this gun is pointed right at your heart."
C: "That is my least vulnerable spot."

"I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that."

"We'll always have Paris."

"Here's looking at you kid."

"Major Strasser's been shot. [pause] Round up the usual suspects."

"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Every Day...

From my junior high school days, sometimes I feel pain in my leg.
And,I couldn't walk at the age of....maybe 14.
Because the pain was so hard.
But I didn't go to hospital.I was patient.
Then...sometime I felt pain same part,nevertheless I didn't think go to hospital.

I entered university without having medical treatment.
As usual,I felt pain.disregard,disregard...
But at last, when I did part-time-job on last month,I couldn't walk again!
The pain was very terrible! So,I went to hospital.
As a result,now,I go to hospital everyday.Everyday!
It's trouble....
I get an injection on my arm everyday. And once a week,I have injection on my leg.
furthermore,I have to take medicine.
......(- -).......

I absent today's lesson.Sorry,I wasn't in time(>_<)I went to hospital in the morning.
Usually, the day of only injection on arm will finish about 30minutes.
But, Today it take 2hours!So...I couldn't go.
.....It's excuse...sorry....

Good morning!

Today we're going to finish the movie, right? To tell the truth, I didn't understand very much last time(^_^;) I hope I can understand today's section...
And from that experience I found that I depended on Japanese subtitle a lot when I see foreign movies. When I see movies, I always try to listen to what actors are saying, and not to read subtitles, though. I wish I could be able to see foreign movies without subtitles someday.

Watching movies

Sorry for those who voted for a movie 'Men in Black'. True, I recommended this movie to you yesterday, but I thought we should watch another one with full of adventure. Anyway, I'm glad we will enjoy watching two movies in a couple of next classes. All the best, guys. Quick announcement here: Jun 21 lecture by Witi Ihimaera about New Zealand. For those who are undecided to go, please come to this lecture. It's highly unlikely that the author of the novel 'The Whale Rider', which inspired the movie titled the same, will come to Hirosaki again. In fact, this is a rare and special opportunity for Hirosaki University students to know first-hand about history and culture of New Zealand, or Aotearoa in Maori language.

English metalanguage

I hope everyone enjoyed today's class about English metalanguage. The subject can go much deeper than I would have wanted to take it, but you should know at least the basic terms for talking about grammar and vocabulary. You might do better checking out the links on my Language Links page on my website.

After class I looked up the subject of "metalanguage" on Wikipedia and found a technical article about it. Those of you who are interested in linguistics may want to study it more there, or you may ignore it as the case may be.

Next week we have the last report, and then I will bring some videos so you can decide what you want to listen to. If someone has a portable PC (laptop, notebook, etc.) with a DVD player you might want to bring it, so I can show you how you can play European DVDs on Japanese computers, even though you cannot play them on Japanese DVD players.

Think about what you want to do next in the class. We can talk about it on the blog, then decide in class. What skills do you want to practice most from now on in here?

Using Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a collectively written web encyclopedia that is in several languages. It is available in various languages, but of course the different languages are different in terms of both coverage and reliability. The encyclopedia is supposed to be very reliable because anyone can correct mistakes.

It is a good reference source to use to double check facts. For example, Steak Tartare is from the Tatars, a Mongolian people who migrated to the west. There is also a rather large article about hamburgers. It includes information about Japan. There is also a short article about Salisbury Steak which also includes information about Japan.

I learned quite a bit from reading these articles. I recommend Wikipedia to you.

About presentation

Our group had a presentation about astorology. Because I'm interested in star sign, bood-type, any other kinds of things about character. Maybe, most of women had interests in it when they are children, didn't you? I was used to talk about my friends and lovers with my friends. It was very excited! Astrology is more complicated and deeper than what we told you. Planets are infinity! Then, I like Abe Hiroshi too. The drama which I like is that he acts with Miyasako hiroyuki, which is home drama. Oh~! The title is "At home dad"?? I made a spelling mistake...? Next class, the rest of three groups will have their presentations. I'm looking forward it!

Yesterday's presentation

Yesterday we had presentations of two groups. Astrology group(my group) and Abe Hiroshi group. I wanna say thank you for Kim and Kenichi's work with me, and good work for Abe Hiroshi group. God job everyone!
As a matter of fact, a few days ago, I bought a thick birthday book (Perhaps dictionary?!) which is written details of all each birthdays. It is written about star and fortunetelling. It's interesting so if there is someone who wants to know about your or your friends' birthday, please ask me. I'll pleased to let you know. Besides, the book also tells famous person's name who has same birthday. In this connection, My birthday is same as Ueda shinya(Comedian, one member of Cream stew). (>▽<) I was very surprised.

Visiting my old school

Some of you have already known that I have a teaching practice next month. Today, I visited my old junior high school to observe a class. Actually, I visited there yesterday to arrange about teaching practice. But my English teacher who takes in charge of me advised me to come from tommorow to adjust the atmosphere and know how teacher do in a class. So, I went today too. After watching the class, My memo pad was full of many things I had studied. I observed seventh grade fifth class. Students of the class were still very young, and I remembered when I was a junior high school student like them. And meanwhile,Some of the students who I met in the school greeted me or bowed me. They were very dear I thought.
The English teacher advanced and leaded the class smoothly. I respected him very much. I learnt and found a lot today. I want to try hard and make a lot of experience and memories through teaching practice next month.

Practice in school for the deaf

Last weekend, I went to school for the deaf in Aomori to practice teaching and care students. They had sports festival then, so I helped it. Befere practice, I was very nervous because I didn't know what I can do.
But teachers and students there are very friendly and kind. I didn't know finger language, but I could talk by speaking loudly and opening my mouth very big. I was taught some finger languages by students and teachers, for example "Good morning" "I am ~" "It's fine today" "Best smile" which is the theme of the sports festival. Actually, everyone had good smile!!
This experience is shocking for me. I could get many things from that. I want to make use of this experience to next practice.

clear weather

Our presentation topic is about Abe Hiroshi, and now,I more research on.
I found his funny story,so I am going to introduce it when our presentation.
Since I know this story,I like him more.
Including unbelievable story but all material delightful!
He is not normal....(^^;)

Today is sunny day,so I feel happy.
I like fine day(probably almost you also like)and sun shine.
so,I want to enjoy this wonderful day!

But....Today,I have a part time job(>_<)
so I have to go soon.

See you next class!

teacher training

Next week, I'm gonna visit a junior highschool to apply teacher training.
I'm so nervous...
I should be very polite, but I'm worried that I may make mistakes...I have to keep my eyes on my speaking not to be rude. Even just asking teacher training, I'm so nervous, I wonder whether I can teach English in front of 30 or more students next year.

Anyway, I have to do my best! I wish things come off.

today's class

We faced lots of serious matter.
It is difficult to solve right now,I think.

Almost all of us are taking license of English teacher.
So it's also a matter of us.I mean,we have to think seriously about that.

What can we do to fix Japanese English education?
or,do we have to start stadying English from elementary school??and how can we do??

it's hard for me to think in English...I have to use English brain, not Japanese one.

Anyway,I would like to lead my idea to good form that I can publish.

It is difficult...

Our group research on Abe Hiroshi who is popular actor in Japan.(^_^;)
Last time we found his profile.Of course it wasn't enough to present about him.
So we dicided to check his past scandal. I think all people have both good past and bad past. It is effective to analyze into them to know about him. But I couldn't get any more.(T_T) But I could find his autobiography, so I'd like to read the book somehow before our presentation.

Precious experience

I went to New Zealand Film Festival 2006 in Tokyo on last Thursday.I really enjoyed it!! I watched River Queen which is directed by Vincent Ward. He made A Map of the Human Heart in 1993, What Dreams May Come in 1998, also earned a writing credit for Alien 3 in 1992, The last Samurai in 2002.

And do you know Temuera Morrison? If you took Modern Oceania lecture last semester, you should have watch Once Were Warriors. He is the part of the Jake in the movie. This time his part was Te Kai Po who was the head of Maori tribe. After watching the movie, I could ask some questions, take a photo and get his autogragh!! It was beneficial for me to talk with him!!

Today was great!

Everyone has gotten in a new group, and sooner or later all the groups found topics they want to report about. For the next few weeks you will have to research your topics. Some of you will have to do a lot of research in English. Others will have to do a lot of translation from Japanese, but either way you should be working on your English vocabulary.

Please tell the rest of us what your group decided to report about and how you plan to research it. Keep us informed as you find more sources and information. If you have anything, any websites or other information, that you want us to know about, please contact us.

Mother's Day!!

How are you everyone?I'm a little tired becouse of classes and part-time-job(-_-)
By the way,last Sunday,we had Mother's Day.
Did you say thank you to your mother?
In my case,I always couldn't be obedient to my mother, and though I live away from her,we often have arguments, so this time,it's a good chance for me to say thank you to my mother.I sent flower and message for my mohter(^_^) I hope she understood my feeling.
Well,how about you??

Then,see you tomorrow!

Weekend

Hi! How was your weekend?
I really enjoyed this weekend.
On last Friday, I joined a birthday party for three international
students. They mostly talked in English, but they sometimes talked in French, German, etc.
They seemed to be able to use more than 3 languages! I was very surprised and stimulated.

And another thing I found is, when I drank, I feel more comfortable to speak in English! That may sound strange, but that's true. If you feel nervous to talk in English [I think there aren't so many in this class...] , it's worth trying!

See you in tomorrow class!

How to memorize new words

Next month, I will take TOFEL exam.
So I try to memorize 50 words per a week now, and every Monday I have to take a check test prepared by Mr.Sawada.
But it is tough for me to memorize 50!!
Lets discuss how to expand our vocabulary in our class.(I discussed about it at applied linguistics class on last Monday, but I want to get more opinion.)

Too much pressure will...

make you sick, as matter of fact, so guys, be careful. Seriously. I felt so dizzy after the class today that I had to sit down and relax in the entire afternoon. That was terrible indeed! You can neither understand nor feel anything. In other words, you feel like you fell into the dark cave without a flashright to get out of the cave. At least I hope you know what I'm saying.

Has any of you had a phone call from somebody in English? I did today. That was from Tokyo. But that turned out to be a wrong call and I was kindof relieved since it's been a year since I talked with somebody over the cellphone in English. Telecommunication in English is one of the difficult things I have ever experienced in learning English.

I'm going to have teaching practice at the high school I graduated from 16th to 31st. I hope things are goin' well in my hometown, Asahikawa, Hokkaido. I'll do my best. Good luck to those who are doing the same in the next few weeks as I want you to say so to me!

1:43 am...

Takashi's last post about the hanami experience with his seminar members including Mr Sawada during the GW reminded me of one important thing between Mr Sawada and other Japanese fathers who usually spend weekends sleeping (not my dad, of course!):to be, or not to be father. I guess a male student, whether or not they want to be a father of his own children in the future, need to learn a lot from the fathers like Mr Sawada in order to make him not look like a father of his children but to be called as a father by his own kids. Sounds nice, doesn't it?

On May 9, '06, I found an interesting article in the Japan Times about medical service in Japan. Another example of the need to spaek English in Japan is shown in the article. We've already been given an presentation about what is called Easy Japanese in the last class, haven't we? I think the issue is not Japanese itself, but English. Make comments on this, please, guys! I look forward to discussions in the blog or in the class if we can.

Oops! 5 past 2 am...good night, everyone...

My Golden Week

I had a Hanami-party with my seminer's member at Hirosaki-park.
The day was very fine, and the cherry trees were in full bloom!!
Each of us had to make home-made dish,my meal was ome-rice.
The sandwich which was made by Mr.Sawada was very nice!!
His daughter came the party with her father, she looked a little nervous.
But I gave Kakinotane to her, she smiled.
I thought Mr.Sawada was very kind father because he always took care of her.
He is one of the best model for me not only as a scholar but also as a father.

We hope we could have discussions about the contents in the class tomorrow.

Six stories on studying abroad

Kenichi’s story
It is only me in the group who has never gone abroad, but I want to go to New Zealand in order to study English and its culture.
The reason why I want to go overseas is because of my ALT teacher when I was a junior high school student. He was from New Zealand. He was so kind and taught the class not only English but a lot of other things including foods, beautiful scenes and the people in his mother land. When I heard his story, I came to want to have a different experience and decided to go to New Zealand someday. I talked with him after the class. It was the first time for me to talk with a foreigner. But it was so exciting because I could express myself by using English, not Japanese!
I once had a chance to go to New Zealand during my high school years, but I missed that chance! I regretted it so much.
So I will by all means go to New Zealand next spring vacation. To realize my goal, now I should save money and study a lot. It must be hard for me, but I will do my best to make my dream come true.

Hirono’s story: “My story in New Zealand-AUT International House-“
I have spent two weeks in New Zealand to study English. I always went to school every morning and studied English there during the course period. The language school was called AUT International House. There was a diversity of students who had come to New Zealand from all around the world. My class was no exception. There were Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, and Peruvian students in the class. They were very friendly and positive in their studies.
There were only about ten students in the class, so my classmates and I found it lucky to study English in such a small class.
My class teacher, Tim, gave us many kinds of lesson in the class. She indeed devised various ways of learning English. Thanks to her teaching methods, we could learn English cheerfully. For example, she used music in the class. The song was James Blunt’s ‘You’re Beautiful’. Each of us had a separate piece of paper which was written parts of the lyrics of the song and we had to arrange papers to make the lyrics correct in order. We listened to the song as long as we could find the lyrics of the song. After the lesson, I found it very useful for me to listen to the music to improve my English listening skill.
We also did some group activities in the class. We did games such as spelling quiz, tried to find words described by Tim. One day in the group, I talked about myself since the topic I got was ‘What’s your best memory in your life?’. I also talked about my future career when I got the topic of ‘What do you want to be in the future?’. My classmates could know about myself at the same time I could know about them more.
The life in AUT IH was so precious for me that I am very grateful to all the people I have met in the school. I learned not only English but also many ways of teaching English during the course in AUT International House.

Mizuki’s story
As a month-long home stay program during the summer break, I went to the United States when I was a junior high school student.
While I was in the States, I wasn’t good at speaking and listening to English. I made mistakes in every time I talked, but my host family helped me to improve my speaking English skill in order to make myself feel comfortable in the house. But I enjoyed a stay in the United States and experienced a lot of wonderful things during the stay. Everyone I had met in America was very friendly.
As soon as I came back to Japan, I found it interesting to learn English and to study International Relations. Now, I really want to study abroad again, and I want to learn a lot of things while I am in overseas. So I need to keep practicing English in order to make my dream come true.

Chiaki’s story
I have been to Auckland, New Zealand for six weeks during the spring break this year. I learned English in the language school of AUT every week. Over the weekends, I went sightseeing.
My classmates were mostly from Asia, although some students were from Europe and South America. Chinese and Korean students are the majority in the class.
During the course, my classmates and I learned 4 skills of English-listening, writing, speaking and reading skills of English-to improve English. It was a good experience for me to learn English with foreign students in the class. I learned many things from my classmates. Communication was not easy at all when we misunderstood each other in English. My classmates didn’t pronounce English like a native speaker of English, of course, as I didn’t, too. It took some time to get over the problem of communication.
I went to many tourist places in Auckland including Sky Tower, the museum, the aquarium, the zoo and so on. I saw a beautiful night view when I was in the highest building in the southern hemisphere of the earth. It was amazing!
Auckland has a lot of beaches and volcanoes. The sea was really beautiful. I climbed the big volcano called Rangitoto on the last day of my stay in New Zealand. It took over an hour to get to the summit, I was tired, but the view from the top was great!
There are many things to see do in Auckland. The city in the best place I’ve ever visited in my life. I had a really good time in Auckland, New Zealand.

Takashi’s story: “My experience”
I had been to New Zealand for two weeks during my high school years. The reason why I could go there is that I had a special opportunity to take. The high school celebrated the hundredth anniversary of its foundation and it made a special program in which a certain number of students could go to New Zealand for a short period of time. I applied to the program, but there were so many students who had already applied, so I had to take an exam for selection. My exam result was very poor, but I proved in the interview that communication in English is different from obtaining a high score in a test. Luckily in the end, I got the ticket to study abroad.
In Auckland, I stayed with the family which had emigrated from China. We talked a lot of things such as Nebuta. I also talked with them about my dreams, hobbies, and so on. Of course we talked about communication in English. My host mother said like this, ‘I have never studied English because I emigrated from China, but I could become to communicate in English. Nevertheless I can’t read and write English.’. So I realized then there is almost no connection between communication in English and to get a high score in exams. Based on this experience, I think it is important for me to keep practicing English to speak the language fluently.

Kazusa’s story: “My stay in Dunedin, New Zealand”
It has been about two years since I came back to Japan from New Zealand. It is just like a yesterday, though. Why I decided to study abroad was to know a different culture and to learn International Politics in the English-speaking environment. Selected as an exchange student between two universities, it was as if I was on board of the airplane flying all over the destinations to submit the documents and finally the plane arrived at New Zealand with two friends of mine who had also been selected as two of the four exchange students from Hirosaki University to the University of Otago in 2004.
I spent first three months improving my English skills at the University of Otago Language Centre. Since the class was designed to provide its students with academic skills, teachers taught us how to write essays, how to present a good presentation and how to manage study schedule in order to be successful in the university. It was an intense program, so I can’t forget what I have done in the class. That was a valuable experience for me to get prepared for a study at university.
Taking courses during a semester in the University of Otago was different and hard. Not only did I need to concentrate to take notes in the classes, but I had to write essays in each of the classes I had taken, about the volume of 1500 words each, in order to get a higher grade at the end of each class. Fortunately, I took credits in all the subjects in the end. But everything I experienced in Dunedin was different from what I did in Hirosaki.
Let me say in the end that everything you may have heard of is true in terms of costs and job opportunities after graduation. But it doesn’t mean you can’t have your own experience of studying abroad which is different from my own. In other words, it’s entirely up to you whether or not you are going to experience something special overseas during the university’s life of your own.

On behalf of our group, thank you for reading. See you tomorrow morning.

To my group going abroad

It is only me that haven't gone abroad, but I want to go abroad and study English , culture of the country. And especially I want to go to New Zealand.
The reason why I want to go there, it is because of my ALT when I was a junior high school student. He was from New Zealand. He was so kind , and taught us a lot of things, not only English. but also about his mother land. For example delicious foods , beautiful scenes , and kind people etc..When I heard it . I came to want to eat them , see them, meet them , and decided to go to New Zealand someday. And it is the first time for me to talk with foreign people. It was very exciting for me, add to this, it gave me much hapiness .Because I could express myself by using other language, not Japanese!!
I had a chance to go to New zealand when I was a high school student, but I was not smart because of my idleness. So I couldn't get that chance. I regreted it so much.
So I will by all means go there next spring vacation. To realize my plan , now I should save much money and study a lot. It must be hard for me , but I will do my best and realize my dream!!

To the team going abroad

I have been to New Zealand to study English and learn a lot of things there.
I had many experiences in NZ.But this time, I'll tell you about my school life in there.

''My story in New Zealand~AUT International House~''
I spent NZ for two weeks. I went to school in the morning and study English. The school name is 'AUT International House'. There were many students who has different nationarity. For example, my class had not only me Japanese, but Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, and Peruvian. They were very friendly, and besides, they were positive against their studying.
My class cosists of about ten students. The number was very good for us to study English.
My class teacher Tim, gave us many kinds of lesson. She devised ways of our learning. By the grace of her, we could study English cheerfully. For example, she used music in our class. The song was James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful'. In the lesson, we were handed separate pieces of paper which is written the words of the song, and we had to arrange them to make collect order. we could listen to it until complete them. The way made our listening skill up. I thought it was one of the very good way in a lesson.
Besides, there were many interesting ways of studying. Class member were separated and did many kinds of game. Using like sugoloku or riddle, Tim made questions about words. (spelling quiz, vocabrary and grammer) Some times using sugoloku, our team talked about our private topics. When my piece moved on the columm 'What's your best memory in your life?', I had to talk about my best memory, and the columm 'What do you want to be for the future? ', I talked about it. After that I could introduce myself and know the others personarities.
They were very fun and practical ways of studying. I learn there not only English itself but many teaching ways of English.
The life in AUT IH was very precious for me. I really appreciate all members of there.

That's all. Yorosiku please, Kazusa. m(_ _)m I'm sorry for late.

Dear study abroad group.

I went to HANAMI party last Saturday!!It's a joint party with my seminar(^_^)
Cherry blossoms haven't came out yet(-_-) but I enjoyed very much!!

Then, dear my group member. This is my report. Please check it.

When I was in junior high school, I went to the USA to home-stay for a month, during summer vacation. Then,I don't know anything and I'm not good at speaking and listening English. I made mistakes in a lot of situation, becouse of the wall of language. But my host family and other peoples who I met , told and taught me so patiently. Finaly,I could find my position in my family.
Acutually,I just enjoy my home-stay.I remember about my troubles, but I think that I could get wonderful experiences during that days. That is, Everyone who I met helped me a lot of seans.
It's my start that I'm interested in English and international relation. Now, I really want to study abroad again, and I want to learn a lot of things on my own.
So I need more practise, practise, and practise English.

Report

To my group member

I went to Auckland in NZ for 6 weeks in this spring vacation. I studied English in the language school of AUT and went sightseeing in the weekend.
First, I'll tell you about the school. Most students are from Asia, but some students are from Europe and South America. Chinese and Korean are the majority.
There are about 10 students in each class. In class, we study and practice all kinds of skills -4skills, vocaburaly and grammar. Although my English was never improved, it was a very good experience that I studied English with different nationality people. I learned many things from them. But communication in English was not easy. It was really hard to understand their pronunciation. They don't pronunce like native speaker of course, but it is different from Japanese English pronunciation. It happens many times that I misunderstood what they said and they misunderstood what I said. Communication was one of the problem.
Next, I'll introduce the place I visited. I went to Sky Tower which is the highest building in the sourthern hemisphere. I saw a beutiful night view. It was amazing!!
I went to the museum, aquarium, zoo and so on. Every places were really nice.
Auckland has a lot of beaches and volcanoes. I went to almost every beaches near my home. The sea is very beautiful. I climbed the big volcano called Rangitoto on the last day. It took over 1 hour to reach the top. I was tired but the view from the top was great!!
There are many things to see or to do in Auckland. Auckland is the best place I've ever visited!
I had a really good time in Auckland.

Dear my group

This is my report.
To Kazusa, if this is not long enough, please tell me.

“My experience”
When I was a high school student, I have been to New Zealand for two weeks. The reason why I could go there is that I had a special chance. My school had been the hundredth anniversary of the founding, and there was a project about the short period of study abroad in Auckland. The number of the member of it was fixed, so I applied to take a selection exam. My term exams were too bad, but I wanted to prove that it was different to get high score of exam from to communicate in English. I was lucky enough to pass the exam and the interview.
In Auckland I stayed with the family which emigrated from China. We talked a lot of things, such as Nebuta, my dreams, hobby and so on. Of course we talked about communication using English. My host mother said like this, ‘I have never studied English because I emigrated from China, but I could become to communicate in English. Nevertheless I can’t read and write English.’ So I realized that there is a little relation to communicate in English and get high score of exams. Actually I could have spent for two weeks. I think it is more and more important to practice speaking English continuously.

Busy Days

Hello!! I'm Chiaki.
Three weeks have passed since the new semester started. How's it going, everyone??
I'm very busy studying. Let me introduce what I study.

My major is international politics. Now, I'm interested in Japanese diplomacy, especially in Asia.
But I don't have enough knowledge, so I need to study.
My minor is applied linguistics. I hope it helps me to improve my English.

In addition, I study Korean now. I really enjoy Korean. Has anyone ever studied Korean, or been studying? It's difficult to catch the similar pronounciation, but some words are same as Japanese. I think Korean is easy to study for Japanese.

There are many things to study! Sometimes I feel I want to escape somewhere I don't have to study. Although I'm busy, I spend good days.

Hi♪♪

I'm sorry I'm so late.
My seminar is hard, so I haven't been getting enough sleep lately.
And I caught a cold...I'm worried about my future...orz

By the way, cherries will blossom soon. Do you have any hanami plans?

Oh...It's time for bed(2:09 am)!See you tomorrow(。・_・。)ノ

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

OH~MY GOD!

The day before yesterday, my bicycle was stolen by someone! Where is it!?It was last month that I bought it. I have to go to police office! God damn it!
And, I heard cherry blossoms will bloom on 4/30. It's a little late...

Good morning!

My name is Jun Takahashi. Sorry, I am late.

From my self-introduction, yes, I like apples. My grandparents' acquaintance who is a farmer gives us a lot of them every year, so we don't need to buy them in the store. But we have to prepare something in return.

I have lived in many cities, Aomori, Mutsu, and Hachinohe, because of my father's job. Especially I was in Hachinohe for 10 years, so you can ask me how there was!

And...a party? Oh, the park is near from my home, so I can go there on foot.

See you later.

the cherry blossom festival

Hello! Everyone. Are you enjoying your spring life?
By the way, Do you knou the cherry blossom festival in Hirosaki park has already started? (Though flower hasn't bloomed..) Do you have any plan to go to the festival? What will we do? Do we have someone who want to go there ? In class, the opinion 'How about 29th? ' but What do you think about it? I'm free on 29th, If someone who want to go together,I'm pleased to go together(^-^)Are there anyone who want to go cherry blossom festival? And how about Professor Philips ? Let's discuss about it☆

Monday, April 24, 2006

Good evening

I'm Noriyuki Takahashi. I'm very glad to meet all of you. I love films and want to talk about them with you. So after you go to see a movie (or watch a movie on DVD, video, and TV), please tell me about it. I'm looking forward to hearing your remarks about films.

By the way, I had great experience about a week ago. As a volunteer staff, I took part in Photographer Nobuyoshi Araki's project to take pictures of Japanese faces. He was very powerful and funny. He told a lot of jokes and made models and people around him laugh. I thought this was his own way of communication, which brought out the models beautiful expression. I want to refer to him and improve my communication skills.

See you tomorrow.

Fire!

Yesterday(23 Sun.) there was a fire. It happened in very near place from my home. I was so surprised.

When it occured, I was playing with children. Then I heard a siren. Looking out of the window, I saw a ambulance and fire engine. But the cars slowed down. I wondered why they didn't rush to the spot.
Then one of the children said "Look! There is a smoke!!" "Smoke!?" I looked up the sky. There was a brown smoke. And the room we were smelled something burning. I hurried along other window and saw black smoke billowing.
I never expected to encounter a fire on such a near place. It was less than 80m.
Some of child was frightened at the site and howled. So we directed children to go home. But some of them stayed to see it. There were many other onlookers.
About 20 minutes later, the fire was put out. But unfortunately a old woman died in it.
Then it came to light that there was a house of my friend across the road from the fire place. So I phoned her. When I did it, it had passed some minutes. However her voice had been trembling and upset. I was shocked a little. Because she is usually very cheerful. But it was natural response.

By the way, we will have group talking in next class. Let's enjoy it! See you!

Off to a good start!

This class seems to be off to a good start with the blog. Several of you are veterans already, and you know how much fun this can be. Do visit some of the other blogs around the Internet (especially the other English learning blogs) and don't be afraid to leave comments. Internet blogs allow us to contact people all around the world, or even other parts of Aomori prefecture.

Be sure to leave messages about what you want to do in class for the rest of the semester and especially if you want to have a class party for cherry blossom viewing. Cherry blossoms during Golden Week are one of the nicest things about Hirosaki.

If you take an interesting picture, be sure to upload it to the blog so the rest of us can see it, too. If you find any interesting links, be sure to tell us about those, too, especially if they are about English learning. I just learned about the ELT Podcast site. If you don't have an MP3 player, maybe you can listen directly on your computer.

Good evening!

Good evening everyone! This is Masashi Taira.
I'm glad to see my friends from ⅢB class again. And, I'm happy to face with new members. Nice to meet you!!

From this semester, I'm "international cooperations seminar" student.
These days, I read a technical book about it every day to widen my knowledge, and few minutes ago, I finished it at last(In reality, the next book has already wait for me...).
This semester will be very hard and busy term for me. But, I'm looking forward to all of it.

Through this class, I want(must) not only develop my English skills, but also grow closer with classmates.
Let's enjoy this class activities together.

See today's class.Good night.

When self introduction time, she sang a song of Michelle Branch and showed pictures of New Zealand behind her. That' s very impressing for me. Because I like Michelle Branch too!

Takashi, I agree with your opinion. Only writing and reading are NOT english. Listening and speaking are rather important to study English. And your boss thinks only about paper exam, I thought. Japanese English education system is still incomplete. I think.

Mizuki, if you have something to know about my visit, please ask me. I' ll take my picture to school tomorrow.

Anyway, Let's discuss a lot of things in class, thank you.

Listening skills

Good evening!!
I have a topic I want you to think. Please give me your opinion.

I teach English to junior high school students as a cram school teacher.
Today I had a meeting about this years' curriculum, and we discussed about steps of listening test. Our boss told us like this.

"We don't have to take steps to cope with it.Because if we take steps or do not, students' score doesn't become better than now.Instead of it,it is more effective to make students practice writing and reading."

I didn't agree with our supervisor. What do you think about it?
Let's discuss about it in our class.

See you next lesson!

Good evening

Hi! My name is Mituki Okubo.
Today, I went to a high school and participated in a election. It was my first time I vote someone. The election room was very silence. But there were several watchmen. I feel a bit of tenseness.
I think it is good thing we can elect a leader by ourselves. Because we can join a politics by the election indirectly. I wonder why there are some people who don't participate in it. How do you think about it?

See you next class!

Ryuugakusei in Tokyo

Here's an interesting blog by an exchange student from Malaysia who is living in Tokyo.

Feel free to start your own blog to practice English and/or communicate with people from around the world. Avoiding Life is an interesting blog by a JET who teaches English here in Aomori prefecture. The ALEA blog is another blog from an English class, in this case from Libya. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you left comments on their blog.

Welcome to the level 4 class blog!

Several of you were in the level 3 English class last semester and enjoyed blogging. I have another IIIB class who will take over that blog, but I'm creating this new blog for you and the other students in this class to post messages, links and pictures, and to practice writing English and contacting people from around the world on the Internet.

Enjoy!
